With seven laps to go in the Paralympic 5000 meters, Susannah Scaroni went to the front of the pack. When she looked at the big screen she had almost 100 meters on the field. In “no man’s land” she could either wait for the pack or keep going. She kept going, saving a bit in reserve in case they caught her. They didn’t. She won the gold, a second off the World Record. Heading into marathon season following the Games, she was ready to make her mark on her favorite race when a car hit her on a training run before she could even get to the starting line. She’s recovered, with training times rivaling those from last year, but says that her competitors can’t know what to expect from her because she doesn’t know what to expect from herself.
